Episode 14: Grace Mitchell
From a young age, Grace Mitchell was trading her lunches at school for craft supplies and spending her time creating Kleenex sculptures. Growing up she struggled to fit in, which gave her a resilience and an ability to see those around her. At first she pursued dance in college and then switched to interior design, but her professor told her that it was a dying field. So Grace Mitchell studied ASL and went on to teach sign and work with students that were deaf or hearing impiared. She thought she would get her doctorate in oncology, but then Grace and her husband started their family.
Grace Mitchells shares vulnerably and honestly about her life and journey with pregnancy and how she ended up having four kiddos in four years! At some point, Kent, her husband, gave her a journal to document her journey of redoing their house, a nine year project. In this journal, he told her that she had a “Storied Style,” which birthed the name of her blog. When Grace did start her blog, she received almost immediate recognition with plenty of paid ads. Every night after putting her little ones to bed, Grace would pour herself a cup of coffee and begin writing about design for hours. For multiple years, she only got a few hours of sleep as she focused on her family and pursued her passion when she could.
And then one day, Grace Mitchell received an email that she thought was a prank! But within a few months, she had her own show on HGTV and One of a Kind was born.
In this episode, Grace shares how she’s handled setbacks, chosen happiness over and over, refused to set goals, pursued her passion, rolled with the seasons, and focused on her family. Grace Mitchell is full of honesty, vulnerability, hope, compassion, drive, and creativity. Don’t miss this honest conversation about life, design, and washing dishes in the bathtub.
